We all get calls to the wrong number. My number at work is no exception. I have a private inbound 800 number that goes directly to my extension. Now this number contain the number 11 in it and I get a fair amount of calls for an insurance company with 77 in the number. I understand you look at a computer printout and 7’s and 1’s can be mistaken. I try to be courteous the first time people call the wrong number. But I got a call the other day that really made me wonder if some are just starving for attention.
This is the conversation that took place.
Me: Hello, XYX corp may I help you?
Caller: What company is this? (At this point I know that this a wrong number)
Me: XYZ does corporate communication systems for large companies. (This usually gets a response of “oh ok” since they have no idea what I just said)
Caller: So what do you want?
Me: I believe you called me.
Caller: I just got home and found your number on my caller ID.
Me: You saw this number on your caller ID?
Caller: Yes, so I’m returning your call.
Me: This is an inbound line only so there must be a mistake, no one here call you.
Caller: Oh, Okay I thought it might be important.
Me: Good bye (And I hang up)
Is this person A) So lonely they cling to any hope of contact with the outside world in which case they join a chat group for other dateless wonders, or B) Not bright enough to get an answering machine so that people could leave a message if it was important. I really wanted to ask, but didn’t want to be really rude after all this is my place of employment and I’d like to keep getting a paycheck.
