The Misery Ends!

The worse mountain bike season I’ve ever had has come to an end with another DNF. Saturday was the final ICUP race at Wolverine Ridge. Everything was clicking for a good race. Wednesday I did a good ride with some intervals to test the IT band and everything felt good. Friday night’s ride also went really well and the warm-up Saturday morning showed that I was feeling good and ready to rip it up. The race started and unlike last year the pace was pretty quick. I immediately got tossed to the back of the pack which didn’t concern me as this is the longest race of the year. As we climbed up through the woods to the first ascent I was starting to feel really good and started to make my way up through the pack. On first section of the DH everything started to go south. For some reason I wasn’t able to rip through the moon dust and ended up over my handle bars not once but twice. Now I had to slow down to a beginner pace in the decent and ended up having 4 guys catch and pass me. As we progressed up to the fire road I was able to get around the last guy that caught me and just before we popped out on the fire road I was able to get around the third guy and saw another group of 4 guys about 50 feet in front of me. As we started the up the really steep climb I was really starting to feel good and passing people. As I was powering up the last climb before the course heads toward the boardwalk I felt the snap of the chain and knew I was done for the day.

I also came to the conclusion that the Trek is finally done. I’m going to start looking for a new frame and hopefully have a bike by the time cross season rolls around.
